The Standards Program of the World Internet Conference (WIC) Specialized Committee on Artificial Intelligence (SC on AI) held a seminar in Beijing on Sept 9 to review and discuss its Global Artificial Intelligence Standards Development Report. Dozens of experts and scholars from program member organizations, international bodies, think tanks and leading enterprises in the AI sector joined the event both online and offline.
Wei Kai, vice-chair of the SC on AI, co-lead of the Standards Program and director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, presented an overview of the study for the report. The study analyzes the global AI standards landscapes, reviews the work of major economies and international organizationsin developing AI standards, and highlights key challenges while proposing policy recommendations, according to Wei.
The report compiles best practices from member organizations and companies in pre-researching, drafting and revising, as well as promoting responsible AI standards, Wei noted. Representatives from JD.com, SenseTime, Intel, and Zhejiang Lab shared their case studies, offering valuable insights for advancing responsible AI standards.
During the discussion session, representatives from the Global Digital Foundation, the British Standards Institution, Arm China (China) Co., Ltd., Nokia Shanghai Bell Co., Ltd., 360 Group, iFlytek, Evernote, Lenovo Group, HONOR Device Co., Ltd., and the Cyber Security Association of China provided comments and suggestions on the report.
Experts lauded the report for its comprehensive and in-depth research, noting that it systematically reviewed the current status of global AI standards and the progress made by major economies and international bodies in this area. They highlighted that the study would serve as a strong foundation for further discussions on the issue and contribute to the development of responsible, interconnected AI standards worldwide.
According to WIC officials, the report will be refined based on feedback and released at the 2025 WIC Wuzhen Summit to help build international consensus and advance the development of global AI standards.
The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
