The Release Ceremony for World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements, which has been held for seven consecutive years, is a major event of the World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit. It aims to lead frontier innovation in science and technology, advocate technical exchanges and cooperation, and act as a display platform for the world's leading Internet scientific and technological innovation achievements. We are launching an open call for 2023 World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements to government departments, international organizations, social groups, research institutions, colleges and universities, technology communities, companies, and innovation teams.

Scope of collection

The following three categories of leading scientific and technological achievements in the internet field worldwide will be eligible for submissions: Basic Research, Key Technology, and Engineering Research and Development.

The achievements in Basic Research refer to those that have explained scientific phenomena, characteristics, and laws, and made significant scientific discoveries. The following conditions shall be satisfied:

1. Undiscovered or unelucidated by predecessors: the scientific discovery is proposed internationally for the first time, or the scientific theory is first elucidated worldwide, or the main work is first published internationally.

2. Significant scientific value: the discovery is of original viewpoint in the theory and academia; or is innovative in research methods; or have important impacts on promoting the development of disciplines or economic building and social development.

3. Recognized by the international scientific community: the main work has been published in international academic journals or as an academic monograph for more than two years; its important scientific conclusions have been published in important international academic conferences and publicly available academic journals by international counterparts, especially when cited by important academic journals and academic monographs.

The achievements in Key Technology refer to significant or innovative scientific and technological achievements in the research and development of key technologies. The following conditions shall be satisfied:

1.Prominent technological innovation: the achievement has significant  technical innovations, especially original technological innovations which can lead the industry; with relatively high technological difficulty, addressed the hotspots, difficulties, or key issues of industry development; or its overall technical performance and economic indicators achieved international forefront level.

2.Significant application benefits: significant economic, social, and ecological benefits have been brought after the application and promotion of the achievement, and achieved market value or social value.

3.Promote technological advancement in the industry: the achievement has high-level transformation, and have significant impacts on technological progress and industrial structure adjustment, optimization, and upgrading.

The achievements in Engineering Research and Development refer to those that have made major innovations or breakthroughs in the engineering development, design and other aspects of systems, equipment and devices, with significant social and economic benefits.

1.Originality: the achievement is proposed internationally for the first time.

2.Advancement and Creativity: the achievement has significant innovations in technical ideas, principles, or methods, especially original innovations; or its main performance, technical and economic indicators, scientific and technological level, etc., lie in the forefront of the world.

3.Significant application benefits: significant economic, social, and ecological benefits have been created after the application and promotion of the achievement, and have prominent market value or social value.

How to Submit

Each applicant can submit multiple achievements. Each achievement can only be submitted in ONE of the three categories. The online platform is the only channel for submitting achievements.

Achievements to be Released

Approximately 20 achievements in each category will be presented or announced at the Release Ceremony for World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements during the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit. Approximately 60 achievements will be compiled in the collection of World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements - The Charm of Science and Technology.

Procedures

Phase 1: Achievements Submission 

(From May to June)

Please submit your application at https://awards.wicinternet.org/ (Chinese website) or https://awards.wicinternet.org/en (English website) within the specified time.

Phase 2: Achievements Review

 (From July to August)

A Review Committee composed of internationally-renowned experts in the internet field will conduct a comprehensive review and shortlist leading achievements. 

Phase 3: Achievements Release Preparation

(From July to September)

Owners of shortlisted achievements will be notified to further submit presentation materials that visually display their achievements. 

Phase 4: Showcase of Achievements

 (During the 2023 WIC Wuzhen Summit)

The leading achievements will be presented at the release ceremony.

The owners of the shortlisted achievements will be invited to the release ceremony, previous owners of The Charm of Science and Technology will have the chance to present the ceremony.
